Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a beautiful process, but it doesn’t always feel this way! As mom’s body is changing and adapting to accommodate a growing human being (or more!) this can add extra stress to her body. Chiropractic provides a safe and gentle approach to help restore proper biomechanics and nerve function in mom which can help promote an optimal environment for baby to grow.

Perinatal Chiropractic Providers

Many chiropractors learn how to take care of moms during pregnancy. Some chiropractors have chosen to continue their education in this field to become specialists in prenatal, pregnancy, perinatal and pediatric chiropractic care. The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) is the leading organization in pregnancy and pediatric chiropractic care. There are three distinctions that are important for moms and families to be familiar with.

Webster Certified: chiropractors that have received advanced training in the Webster technique, which is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment with the goal to reduce the effects of pelvic imbalance

CACCP (Certification by the Academy Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics): certified with the ICPA as having completed advanced training in perinatal and pediatric care

DACCP (Diplomate in the Academy Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics): indicates the highest level of training

Chiropractors that have been specially trained to help pregnant mothers may use special tables or pillows that allow a pregnant mom to safely and comfortably lie on her stomach to avoid unnecessary pressure on her growing belly while receiving her chiropractic adjustment.

Why Should Moms Receive Chiropractic Care?

As mentioned above, the pregnancy process requires a lot of adaptation by mom’s body to grow and deliver a baby. A specific hormone, called Relaxin, allows for the joints in mom’s body to expand and make room as needed. Although this is a necessary thing, it can sometimes allow joints to easily fall into the wrong place and cause discomfort and decreased function in mom’s pelvis, especially if there were already underlying biomechanical issues before pregnancy.

Having a balanced pelvis helps mom feel and move great, but also allows for the baby to have adequate room to be in the optimal position when it is time for birth. The goal at Pure Chiropractic is to provide a happier pregnancy and easier birth for mom and baby.

When Should Moms Receive Chiropractic Care?

Despite what most people think, the best time to see a chiropractor is actually before conceiving. By having a properly balanced pelvis and a nerve system that’s functioning at its highest potential, we are setting a solid foundation for a healthy and happy pregnancy.

Pelvic imbalance can also interfere with proper nerve function to the uterus and create problems with the conception process. So it’s best to start chiropractic care before getting pregnant, but if you missed this step, we can still help wherever you are in your pregnancy journey.

Potential Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy
